Two pond sliders basking on moss
A pair of pond slider turtles (Trachemys scripta) rest on a moss-covered mound, one stretched out and the other partly perched on the first's shell. The species is the most widely traded freshwater turtle on earth and one of the most successful invasives — a frequent sight in parks and water features far from its native Mississippi basin. Aquatic turtles like these are exactly the kind of animal documented in lachryphagy reports from the Amazon, where butterflies drink their tears for sodium.
