A sweeping sunset of layered rose, amber, and deep violet lights up the sky above a wide Amsterdam canal during the spring 2020 lockdown, the waterway unusually quiet — cars line the quayside but the streets are empty of people. The canal water mirrors the spectacular sky, turning the entire surface into a luminous band of colour. Canal houses with their dark gables and just-emerging spring foliage frame either side, providing a sober foreground to the sky's theatrics. The emptiness feels eerie and poignant.
