The Stopera on the Amstel

Amsterdam's Nationale Opera & Ballet building — widely known as the Stopera — presents its distinctive brick-and-glass facade across the open water of the Amstel on a bright summer day. Small pleasure boats and an open sloop cross the sun-lit foreground while a larger historic vessel lies moored to the right. The Munttoren clock tower is visible to the left above the Waterlooplein bridge. The scene captures a rare wide-open moment in a city usually experienced through the narrow frames of its canals.
