Sólheimasandur DC-3 Plane Wreck Iceland Black Sand
The stripped fuselage of the Sólheimasandur DC-3 rests on Iceland's black volcanic sands, its hollow ribs framing the dark desert and a snow-capped glacier beyond. The US Navy Douglas Super DC-3 crash-landed here on the south coast in 1973; all aboard survived, and the abandoned hull has since become one of Iceland's most photographed landmarks. Backed by glacier and mountains under a pale sky, the weathered aluminium shell stands as a haunting monument to isolation.
