Noctilucent Clouds Over the Amstel

Rare noctilucent clouds — the highest clouds in the atmosphere, lit from beyond the horizon and visible only in deep midsummer twilight — shimmer in electric-blue wisps over the river Amstel in Amsterdam. Below them a long classical facade and a row of gabled canal houses line the far bank, while a low arched bridge draws its lamps and glowing windows into long golden streaks across the glass-still water. The wide panorama holds the lamplit waterfront and its near-perfect reflection in calm symmetry, a serene moment in the pre-dawn hours of the longest days.
