A deep crimson garden rose in partial bloom fills this square-cropped frame against an almost-black background, lit from the upper right to reveal the velvet texture of its petals and subtle gradations from magenta at the edges to ruby-red at the centre. Shot in the Netherlands in October 2020 with the Nikon D850 and 105mm macro, the composition strips the bloom of any garden context and turns it into a study in colour and shadow.
