A precisely symmetrical row of Amsterdam's most celebrated canal houses lines the Damrak waterfront in this moody black-and-white night study, their illuminated windows and ornate gable lines doubling faultlessly in the dark, motionless water below. A small heart detail is carved into one facade, almost invisible against the baroque richness of its neighbours. The harbour basin is deserted and perfectly still — a nocturnal intimacy that vanishes within minutes once the tour boats return and the water begins to move.
