Zebra longwing on tropical milkweed

A zebra longwing extends its proboscis into the bright orange-and-yellow blooms of tropical milkweed (Asclepias curassavica). The plant is a critical heliconian nectar source in tropical and subtropical climates and a host plant for monarchs too. This is the everyday behaviour the species is most often seen performing — feeding through the warmer hours, mating mid-morning, roosting communally at night. Greenhouse, Amsterdam.
