A harlequin ladybird (Harmonia axyridis) perches on the pointed tip of a pink magnolia petal, its orange and black spotted shell jewel-bright against the soft botanical pink. The 105mm macro dissolves the remaining petals and green leaves into layered pastel behind the insect. Shot in September 2020 in the Netherlands with the Nikon D850, this is the invasive Asian ladybird that has colonised European gardens — and here it looks entirely at home.
