Zebra Longwing Wings Open on Leaf Amsterdam
A zebra longwing (Heliconius charithonia) rests with wings fully spread on a deep green leaf, the bold cream-on-black striping catching dappled greenhouse light. Native to the Americas, this species is unusually long-lived for a butterfly — sometimes surviving three months — because it supplements nectar with pollen, an unusual trick that lets it keep producing eggs across an extended adult lifespan. Photographed in a tropical greenhouse in Amsterdam.
